Infectious complications of surgically treated musculoskeletal injuries: review of risk factors and etiological agens in years 2000-2005

Abstract

The aim of a study was to find out known risk factors and etiological agents of infectious complications with patients surgically treated for musculoskeletal injuries within 6 years. The infectious complications occured predominantly with patients with known risk factors.

The most extensive soft tissue injury associated with fracture, diabetes and long-termed stay of the polytrauma patient in intensive care unit were identified as the most frequent risk factors in the group of 5234 patients The patients of these risk groups also presented with the most serious microbiological findings
