Comparison of isotropic and orthotropic material property assignments on femoral finite element models under two loading conditions

Abstract

One of the biggest problems in computer simulations in biomechanics by means of the finite element method (FEM) is material property definition. Biological tissues such as cortical and cancellous bone are inhomogeneous, viscoelastic and anisotropic (orthotropic) materials and their material properties are closely described in number of publications].

Authors used this data in the presented paper but in our opinion it was used incorrectly, because definition of orthotropy direction in their model does not respect the real anatomical situation in the femur.
