Gender differences in nociception and interpretation of pain

Publication at Third Faculty of Medicine |
2008

Abstract

The men and the women have different perception and interpretation of pain. There are several backgrounds for this difference like physical factors (body size, skin thickness, surface skin temperature, sweating etc.), physiological, genetical and pharmacological factors (different neuronal organization density of opioid receptors, different metabolic rate, hormonal millieu etc).

Psychological, ethnical, racial and trans-cultural differences are also non neligible. We can not simply conclude which factors are the most important.

During the treatment of pain syndromes we have to consider these differences and use those for deepen our targeting of pain therapy.
