Schizophrenia as a genetic disorder of synaptic connection

Publication |
2008

Abstract

The article reviews evidence of links to schizophrenia for more than forty candidate genes located on all human chromosomes. It concludes that, with exception of a few, such as NRG1 on chromosome 8 or DTNBP1 on chromosome 6 the associations between mutations in the candidate genes and schizophrenia are tenuous at best or might exist only in certain groups of patients.

Studies using larger populations displaying greater genetic homogeneity may be needed to obtain more positive answers.
