NOTES (Natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery) in gyneacology

Publication at Third Faculty of Medicine |
2009

Abstract

NOTES is an innovative surgical methodology approach that uses natural body orifices, i. e. without abdominal wall incision, to access organ that undergoes surgery. NOTES is applicable to all areas of medicine.

Unlike the other medical branches that keep seeking an ideal access path, in gyneacology is an advantage in well known transvaginal access. Out of the other well known approaches it is worth to mention transgastritic, transcolonal, transvesical etc.

The main purpose of this new method, until recently considered experimental, is to reduce negative effects of classical surgery. NOTES, sometimes reffered to as scarless surgery eliminates possible complications due to abdominal wall incison, healing process, hernia formation, scar inflammation, reduces postoperative pain that results in decreased analgetics usage and shortens reconvalescence intervals.

It appears to be an ideal surgical method for obese patients suffering from internal polymorbiditis whose treatment by laparotomic or laparoscopic approaches has its practical constraints. Spectra of surgeries carried out by NOTES technique is continuously widening and it is only a matter of time until it reaches common practice.
