Common principles of analgesics originally developed and used as anticonvulsants and antidepressants

Abstract

The basic principals about the origin and development of neuropathic and chronic pain are mentioned as well as the possibility of their treatment with adjuvant analgetics. It is especially the treatment with anticonvulsants (antiepileptics) and with antidepressants.

The most important groups of antiepileptics, especially lamotrigine, gabapentin, pregabalin and carbamazepine are mentioned. From antidepressants, tricyclic antidepressants and the antidepressants of 3rd generations like SSRI and SNRI are described.

The indication of treatment and the side effects of these drugs. are cited.
