Intrauterine growth restriction in clinical practice

Publication at Third Faculty of Medicine |
2009

Abstract

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a condition in which a fetus in unable to achieve its genetically determined potential size. A fetus in considered growth restricted if its estimated fetal weight (EFW) is below the 10th centile for appropriate gestational age.

IUGR fetuses are at higher risk of perinatal mortality, neonatal morbidity and long term consequences. There are a number of causes of IUGR and no causative treatment method has yet been identified.

The single most important measure is fetal monitoring using ultrasound (including Doppler parameters and biophysical scores) and fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring. Clinician's goal is to identify fetuses endangered by a hostile uterine environment and optimize timing of delivery considering fetal state and gestational age.
