The phenomenon of suffering in nursing practice

Publication at Third Faculty of Medicine |
2010

Abstract

The presentation aims to point to the phenomenon of suffering in nursing care. Although it may be seen as an abstract philosophical category suffering can be very real for the patients and their relatives and can markedly influence their quality of life.

It is therefore necessary that nurses, who spent most of the time with the patients, recognize possible causes and various signs of suffering. Frequent contact with patients who suffer can lead to feelings of helplessness, moral distress and burn out.

It is important then that the management of the health care facilities pay attention to these issues and implement measures that can prevent burn out syndrome
