From the ethics of principles to the ethics of responsibility

Abstract

Hippocratic, Christian, and biomedical principles have traditionally been taught as one of the main topics of ethics courses in healthcare educational programmes. Although principle based ethics has played an important role in the development of bioethics the practice has shown that many students as well as healthcare workers perceive it as a highly theoretical concept that is difficult to implement.

Since the middle of the last century and even more since the 80's new theories of ethics have been developing which stress the importance of the character traits of the moral agent, the role of caring and necessity of good relationships within which healthcare is provided. The lecture is based on the current literature and own research findings.
