Can rapid tests be used to detect and identify new synthetic drugs (NSDs)

Abstract

The goal of the present study was to examine the ability of colored tests used for testing ecstasy tablets for the presence 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamin (MDMA) and of rapid imunodetection kits to detect selected representative compounds of new synthetic drugs (NSD). In total we have examined 24 compounds including some typical illegal drugs of abuse.

Colored reaction of NSD performed with Marquis, Mecke, Mandelin and Simons reagents led to various colored reactions as expected, however in several cases a cross-reactions between different NSD and also typical drugs of abuse were (e.g. with MDMA or amphetamine) observed. Imunodetection kits showed almost none sensitivity to NSD, cross-reaction was observed only for two substances.

Based on these results it is intriguing, that there is a substantial need of developing new rapid detection kits with group specificity, that will enable to detect a vast majority of NSD
