Abstract

Jan Jessenius (Johannes Jessenius; Jan Jesenský; 1566-1621) ranks among the most important Renaissance polymaths of Central Europe. He studied philosophy he studied philosophy and medicine in Wittenberg, Leipzig and Padua, worked in Wrócław, Wittenberg, Prague and Vienna and was finally executed in Prague.

His scientific and editorial work covers not only anatomy, but also surgery, internal medicine, infectious diseases and even extends further to philosophy and poetry. He was rector of Wittenberg and Prague university and politician of the Protestant fraction in Bohemia.
