Basic overview of renal functions and their role in glucose metabolism

Publication at Third Faculty of Medicine |
2012

Abstract

This article contains a basic overview of renal functions and it deals in more detail with their role in glucose metabolism. First, the principles of glomerular filtration, tubular reabsorption and tubular secretion are described.

Among other tubular processes, the authors focused on those that are associated with glucose reabsorption. The second part of the article describes how the kidney is involved in glucose homeostasis.

The mechanisms of reabsorption and renal gluconeogenesis are mentioned. Finally, the clinical application of the above processes - renal glucosuria - is being discussed
