Marathon run, type 1 diabetes mellitus, glycemic control with continuous monitoring

Abstract

The marathon run is one of the most difficult classical athletic disciplines. It imposes high demands on body training, mental toughness and balanced energetic balance.

The energetic balance, particularly balance associated with body glucose, is the essential factor in successful completion of such run in a patient with type 1 diabetes mellitus. We, of course do not recommend such performance to our patients, nevertheless many of them go through it for different reasons.

In this case report we present a strategy of pharmacological and dietary adjustments for a marathon run in a patient with type 1 diabetes mellitus including a report of continuous glycemic monitoring. It is an example how we can basically proceed and schedule doses of saccharides during both the run and the following period with respect to reducing a risk of hypoglycemia
