Karel Kryl was singer, poet and journalist. After completing secondary school in Bechyně, he worked in Teplice and Olomouc.
In 1967, he became a freelance singer-songwriter. In 1968, he briefly worked as a production assistant in television in Prague.
In 1969, he applied for political asylum in the Federal Republic of Germany. He lived in Munich and until 1991 worked as an editor of Radio Free Europe.
After 1989, he lived in both Germany and Czechoslovakia (later the Czech Republic and Slovakia).
