Pelagic food web and microbial loops in low-alkalinity mountain lakes

Publication at Faculty of Science |

Abstract

Pelagic food webs in high mountain lakes sensitiv to acidification are simple, but their micobial part might be active and well developed. The main components of pelagic biomass were assessed in mountain lakes with alpine catchments from Tatra Mts (Slovakia) and central Norway.

Three main components are bacteria, phytoplankton and zooplankton. Protozoan grazers (heterotrophic flagellates and ciliates) were rather scarce and only occasionally reached more than 1 - 3
