Abstract
Habilitation thesis consists of two interconnected parts. The first part discusses the general research problems of urbanization and suburbanisation, methodological approaches to the study of the social environment in metropolitan regions and assessing current trends in the settlement system in post-socialist countries.
The second part consists of ten papers already published by author.
