Abstract

Diffusion Particle Sizer (DPS) and Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS), TSI INc., have been used to measure aerosols in the range 3 to 200 nm in a cave and in an experimental mine. The measurement areas in the cave and in the mine were sealed by wallwith double doors.

The results for both DPS and SMPS were basically the same, showing ussually an intermittent peak around the smallest size 3 or 5 nm, and a bigger one or sometimes two peaks, at 40 and or 100 nm. The key point of this paper is to repo t that we have observed a possible and previously overlooked source and mechnism for the transport of heavy metals into the atmosphere.
