INCREASING THE EFFECTIVITY OF TEACHING MATHEMATICS AT UNIVERSITIES

Publication at Faculty of Mathematics and Physics |
2005

Abstract

At the Faculty of Education, Charles University, Prague, the first of a series of problem solving courses has been organised as an individual learning course for six years. By that we mean, that students have no scheduled classes, they work individually and meet their teacher for consultations.

The main aims of this form of study (besides the obvious goal to teach different strategies of problem solving) are to develop their ability to (a) work independently, (b) critically evaluate mathematical texts, (c) write mathematically. The aim of this presentation is to show advantages and disadvantages of an individual form of education and give suggestions for improvement.
