Czech women: unexploited potential of the country

Publication

Abstract

Using comparative international data we document unique long term trends and specific position of Czech women on the labor market. In particular, Czech women experience extended participation in education, than a significant withdraw from the labor force for a considerable period of time during the period of parentship, and they leave the labor market abruptly at relatively young ages around legal retirement age.

We estimate the costs connected to withdrawals from the labor market during parentship, and argue that the withdraw is likely to be caused by the lack of child care facilities and part-time jobs in the Czech Republic.
