Abstract

Subcutaneous mastectomy is the method of choice as a preventive procedure in women with a high risk of a development of mammary carcinoma, and as curative surgery in some mammary carcinomas. Provided that the mammary gland is removed as a whole, inclusive of its upper margin and its axillary part, as well as its structures from the region below the areola and in the mamilla, then it is not possible to designate this method as an insufficiently extensive procedure.

It can be carried out as a sole procedure or it can be combined with an immediate or delayed reconstruction of the breast.
