Arteriovenous shunts belong to less frequent vascular disorders affecting the orbit primarily or secondarily. They comprise in particular arteriovenous malformations, carotidocavernous fistulae and dural arteriovenous fistulae.
Most frequently secondary affections of the orbital veins are encountered during the development of a carotidocavernous fistula. In addition to the typical symptomatology a carotidocavernous fistula has also a typical angiographic and echographic finding.
The authors present the echographic finding of a dilated superior ophthalmic vein, discuss also other echographic signs in the orbit during the development of a carotidocavernous fistula.
