Antenatal corticosteroids: too early and too often?

Publication |
2007

Abstract

The severity of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) of a premature newborn is one of the decisive factors that fundamentally affects postpartum intensive neonatology. Managing it as effectively and as gently as possible is the most important task in the early stages of this care.

It decides on the occurrence of other complications that are essential for the further development of the newborn. First of all, it is necessary to mention intraventricular bleeding (IVH), which will affect the neuropsychological development of the child, as well as the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and retinopathy (retinopathy of prematurity, ROP).

The latter two pathologies are directly related to the length and intensity of applied conventional artificial ventilation.
