Pertussis

Publication at Second Faculty of Medicine |
2011

Abstract

The past two decades have seen a significant increase in the incidence of pertussis, while the epidemiology of this disease changed, shifting towards older age groups like adolescents and adults. The infection, however, is still most dangerous and possibly fatal to susceptible infants.

Immunization schedule was thus changed to prevent the spread of pertussis - the first dose of hexa vaccine is now being applied in the 9th week of life and adolescents, who are an important source of the infection, are being revaccinated between the ages of 10 and 11. As for the cocoon strategy, revaccination is also recommended to parents and to people in close contact with newborns, including people in professional contact with this age group - especially healthcare workers.

This publication reminds the readers of a clinical manifestation of the above mentioned disease, which almost fell to oblivion in the vaccination era.
