Analysis and differential diagnosis of nystagmus in clinical practice

Publication at Second Faculty of Medicine |
2007

Abstract

The purpose of this communication is to summarize the diagnostic benefit of nystagmus examination in the clinical diagnosis of vestibular disorders. We provide an overview of examination methods, pathophysiology and differential diagnosis of the main types of nystagmus.

We classify nystagmus on the basis of its characteristics, which can be detected directly at the patient's bedside. This less common but practically oriented approach facilitates topical and pathophysiologically based diagnosis of nystagmus and balance disorders in general.

From this point of view, the text is divided into directionally stable nystagmus, visual nystagmus, vertical, rotational nystagmus, fixation-induced nystagmus, dissociated nystagmus and atypical forms of nystagmus.
