Abstract
Over the past decade, fetal magnetic resonance has become a clinically useful supplement to sonography. Although ultrasound remains to be the primary prenatal imaging method due to its proven utility, widespread availability, and relatively low cost; fetal magnetic resonance provides higher contrast resolution and more imaging options thus being beneficial for high-risk group of pregnancies or in cases with significantly limited sono-acoustic conditions.
This article aims to provide a review of fetal magnetic resonance imaging, including information about its history, safety, current techniques and common indications. Practical aspects are emphasized.
Any clinician who performs prenatal ultrasound should expect to see occasional patients who might benefit from the incremental information provided by magnetic resonance and know some basic information about this imaging technique.
