Abstract

Onychomycosis is a very frequent nail disorder in adults. Its therapy is long lasting, but successful thanks to modern antimycotic drugs.

The choice of antimycotic drug depends on a severity of nail involvement and on the general healthy status of the patient. Systemic antimycotics (itraconazol or terbinafine) are used in case of the involvement of the whole nail plate (total dystrophic onychomycosis), in case of proximal type, and in those distal onychomycosis which is spread on the majority of the nail plate.

Local antimycotics in the form of nail vanishes (amorolfin, ciclopirox) are used both, in monotherapy or in addition to the systemic treatment, and as preventive measures, as well. Onychomycosis is not a cosmetic problem, but it could also be a severe disease in patients with an immune deficiency.
