Vulvovaginal candidiasis, pharmacotherapy and prevention

Publication |
2011

Abstract

Vulvovaginal candidiasis is one of the most common fungal diseases. Approximately 75 % of women will have experienced at least one episode of this disease during their life.

The sporadic form of vulvovaginal candidiasis can be treated very successfully with topical or systemic azole antifungals in short or unit-dose regimens. Special care has to be devoted to therapy of pregnant women and complicated and recurrent forms of the disease.

Self-medication is often involved in the therapy of vulvovaginal candidiasis; correct consultation from the pharmacist plays an important role then.
