Abstract

Distortion of the ankle is one of the most frequent traumas seen both in sports and in association with various forms of movement. Treatment and diagnosis of distortions are often underestimated.

The main treatment, naturally, is rest and eventually surgery. Yet liniments and hydro-therapy play an important role in restitution during both the acute phase and recovery.

We point out the effect of applying ointments containing an extract of Comfrey flowers and leaves in the acute phase of such trauma. For this treatment to be effective, accurate and early differential diagnosis is necessary.

With the help of a double blind clinical trial, we have shown the positive effect of this treatment on reduction of pain as well as swelling, and on the function of the attained joint.
