Abstract

The annual meeting of the American Heart Association beginning in November 2001 published the results of a five-year study of the British Heart Protection Study, focused on lipid-lowering therapy. It was a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, which involves 69 hospitals in Great Britain.

The aim was to determine the effects of simvastatin, 40 mg vs. Separate placebo and antioxidant therapy (vitamins C, E and beta-carotene) vs. placebo, the incidence of vascular events and survival.
