The provided analysis of retrospectively gathered data from standard diabetes outpatient centres corroborates the affirmation that the introduction of insulin pens can improve compensation in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients treated with insulin. The data was gathered retrospectively in outpatient diabetes centres using clinical notes of 1,042 type 2 diabetes patients who had been treated with one or two doses of NPH insulin and who changed to premix insulin 80/30 (70% NPH, 30 % regular) in the course of 2001, due to unsatisfactory compensation.
A statistically significant improvement of average HbA1c was recorded for the whole set, which was in line with the expectations. The rate of improvement of average HbA1crecorded a cli-nically significant value of 0.447 % in the sixth month, as compared with vial insulin application.
