Abstract

Based on the results of clinical studies, target levels for LDL cholesterol in high risk population were redefined, i.e. LDL cholesterol level under 3.0 mmol/l or more recently under 2.6 mmol/l.

Statins are currently considered as indicated practically in all of the pat ients with type 2 diabetes mellitus regardless of baseline TC level: they are suitable for primary prevention in patients with diabetes combined with other risk factors. Most patients with diabetic dyslipidemia can benefit from the treatment with fibrates.

An increasing number of studies deal with efficacy and safety of fibrate-statin combination therapy. Hypolipidemic effect of oral antidiabetic agents is of interest in these patients.
