Publication at Second Faculty of Medicine |
2010

Abstract

The bigger part of annually prescribed medication is prescribed for chronic pain. While recent research shows that these medicines are commonly used in combination with alcohol or other illegal drugs, in terms of addictology, this topic is often marginalised and neglected.

The review article focuses on the analysis of chronic pain and its treatment in the Czech Republic. In the section pointing out the trends that already exist in the abuse of prescribed opioid analgesics, it also touches on the categorisation of the analgesics by theWHOand the use of such a categorisation.

The abuse of prescribed opioid analgesics is also addressed in terms of their combination with alcohol and/or other illegal drugs.
