Abstract

Etiology of the aortic stenosis and the potential for its medical treatment. Calcifi c aortic stenosis is the most commonly operated valve disease.

At the time of surgery, more than 50 percent of patients have signifi cant coronary artery disease. The early valve lesion resembles atherosclerotic plaque.

Calcifi cation related to osteogenesis is the main feature of progression towards stenosis. Effective medical treatment of aortic stenosis has not yet been established.

There is no doubt on the rationale of medical intervention of cardiovascular risk factors, mainly dyslipidemia and arterial hypertension according to guidelines for secondary prevention.
