Insulin therapy is the oldest hypoglycemic therapy used in patients with diabetes mellitus. While in patients with type 1diabetes mellitus it represents the only possible substitution therapy, in patients with type 2 diabetes melitus the use of insulin therapy in various stages of the disease development (even in its early stages) has recently expanded.
Insulin therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes is no longer considered as a last treatment option for unsatisfactory compensated patients, but as a treatment involved in the protection of B-cells function. The strategy of insulin treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus uses all known and available insulin regimes from insulin administration once daily, through combination of insulin therapy with oral antidiabetic drugs, up to conventional intensified insulin therapy.
