Diabetic foot syndrome is a serious medical and social problem and is one of the most expensive complications of diabetes mellitus. In etiology, diabetic neuropathy and macroangiopathy with lower limb ischemia are the most common.
In the treatment of patients with diabetic foot syndrome of mixed, neuro-ischemic, etiology, it is crucial to try revascularization. Next is the drug effect on microcirculation - here we can use mainly infusions with prostaglandin E1.
In a group of 21 type 2 diabetics with ulceration, we monitored the effectiveness of repeated administration of prostaglandin E1 on the parameters of peripheral blood circulation. For 4 years, patients received 20 infusions at half-yearly intervals (each with 60 prostg prostaglandin E1).
During this time, there was no significant progression of ischemia and 87% of defects healed. Low amputation (finger) was necessary in 5 (23.8%) patients, high amputation was not necessary.
