Abstract
Allergen immunotherapy has been utilized in a treatment of allergic reactions for more than hundred years and has been established as an integral part of a care for patients with allergic symptoms. Its effect has been sufficiently proven and its indications have been standardized by many published guidelines.
In bronchial asthma, the role of allergen immunotherapy has for a long time been a matter of debate. While bronchial asthma is usually closely related to allergic sensitization, pathogenetic events in asthma are more complex than in other allergic diseases and allergy remains only one of the pathogenetic mechanisms involved.
Despite this, allergen immunotherapy has been shown as one of the effective treatment modalities, and mainly in patients with clear involvement of a defined allergenic sensitization may improve overall control of the disease.
