Severity and course of bronchial asthma in childhood is significantly related to the severity of asthma in adulthood. It is therefore important to diagnose asthma in children and introduce adequate preventative treatment.
An important role in the assessment of early childhood asthma plays the paediatric general practitioner, who may evaluate the risk of development of bronchial asthma in a child with early symptoms of bronchial obstruction using simple clinical signs and the history. This allows for early introduction of adequate treatment and further specific investigations.
