During the last two decades the treatment of bronchial asthma has substantially changed. The main developments are consequent u se of anti- inflammatory therapy and formulation of basic guidelines whose aim is achieving of good asthma control.
These changes led to si gnificant decrease of asthma severity and major improvement of prognosi s. Modern treatment modalities require a co-operation between pati ents and health professionals.
The patient should always have enough infor mations and instructions but has to accept part of responsibil ity for the treat- ment and appropriately react to disease development and acute situations. Good guided self-management allows achieving of very good results, prevents exacerbations and significantly improves quality of life.
