Hallux valgus in patients with rheumatoid arthritis - current surgical treatment options

Publication at Central Library of Charles University |
2011

Abstract

The aim of the publication is to present different surgical methods that we use for correction of valgus deformity of the big toe. Valgus deformity is the most common deformity of the big toe in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

It causes difficulty walking and problems while wearing shoes. Most of the cases are complex disorders of the foot.

Since the etiology of this defect is multifactorial, a single surgical intervention would not be appropriate and surgical approach must therefore always be individualized. Input from clinical and radiographic examinations are important.

The patient's age, condition of soft tissue, physical activity and involvement of other joints have to be considered. It is often necessary to correct the position of the big toe simultaneously with various surgical procedures of the forefoot, toes and even of the other foot joints.

Early indication and timing of surgical treatment are vital. Surgery of neglected severe deformities is more complex and associated with a higher risk of complications.
