Article comment: "The end of an era"

Abstract

Ralph Richart is today a living legend of pathological, cytological and clinical work in the field of cervical precancerous lesions and carcinomas. As a professor of colposcopy pathology, he enjoys engaging in clinical discussions.

The article The End of an Era reminded me of my first meeting with a hundred people in 1996 at the World Congress of Cervical Pathology. I was acquainted with the story of how the "young" pathologist Richart presented the concept in the early 1970s that severe dysplasia (D III) and carcinoma in situ (CIS) cannot be exactly distinguished.

He proposed merging these two categories into a new classification called third-degree cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN III). This concept has caused outrage among elderly and respected pathologists.
