Solid and semisolid external dermatological drugs

Publication |
2009

Abstract

The character and type of a drug formulation is dependent on the properties of the vehicle into which the active substance is introduced. External dermatological drugs of solid and semisolid consistency are among shape non-specific drug formulations.

Powders, suspensions, gels, pastes, ointments, and creams are commonly prescribed. Both the solute and the solvent are stated in units of weight (grams).

The form of application is selected based on the character of the skin manifestations or the depth of action required. A drug applied inadequately may often fail to have an effect but it may also deteriorate the clinical presentation.

Given the large number of solid and semisolid preparations, this chapter will list the prescriptions for powders, liquid powders, and pastes. Creams, ointments, and gels will be dealt with in part three of this prescription book.

The terminology used in the prescriptions is in conformity with the valid pharmacopoeia (e. g., previously zinci oxydati = currently zinci oxidi, previously endiaroni = currently cloroxini).
