Severely progressing tick-borne encephalitis infection with permanent sequelae

Abstract

Tick-borne encephalitis virus is a frequent agent of central nervous system infections in the Czech Republic. More than one third of affected patients suffer long-term sequelae.

Vaccination can prevent the disease effectively. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of population is vaccinated because many people underestimate the risk of the infection and the severity of the disease.

The authors report a severe and complicated case which resulted in significant and irreversible disability in a previously healthy, working-age male patient.
