Abstract

In this article we review the relatively new class of drugs that come from natural microbial products and have been shown to suppress the immune response. The discovery marked a turning point not only of a transplant, but also represented a breakthrough in the treatment of autoimmune diseases.

In addition, some of the compounds mentioned herein have been shown to inhibit tumor growth, and thus have found their use in oncology.
