Health problems related to drug abuse, possibility of prevention in primary care

Abstract

Drug addiction is accompanied by many complications. These may be due to the direct intoxication of a particular drug, the acquisition of infections via the method of drug application or other external influences.

This paper focuses on the most frequent complications and how they are manifest. The second part of the paper deals with prevention and treatment. primary prevention - to prevent initial drug use, secondary prevention - to stop harm and injury from addiction, tertiary prevention - harm reduction.

Summary: an interdisciplinary approach with cooperation between psychiatrists, infectologists and physicians in other specialties with general practitioner is necessary for better treatment of drug addicts.
