Complications of the hip replacement

Publication at Second Faculty of Medicine |
2008

Abstract

Complications of the hip replacement could be differentiated into per-surgical and early and late post-surgical. Fortunately the frequency of the complications is not high and they could be mostly solved ad integrum.

Correct and timely diagnosis is very important for the successful solution. Disengagement of the hip replacement from the bone socket belongs among the most serious late complications.

The most common reason is an impairment of the contact bone by granulation tissue, which is developed as a consequence of the presence of polyethylene attrition in the neocapsule of the joint replacement. Infection in the surroundings of the implant is a very serious, often threatening the life of the patient, complication.

The only solution is a surgical revision and complete removal of the extrinsic material.
