The latest generation of CT scanners employed in clinical practice allows for clinically relevant assessment of coronary atherosclerosis, cardiac morphology and function, including the assessment of some types of valve disease, and aortic stenosis in particular. Currently, the most common indication for assessment using "dual-source CT", or 64-detector CT, in clinical practice is suspected coronary artery disease in low-risk patients.
As the body of experience with evaluating the findings grows and the quality of CT scanners improves, the indications are likely to expand rapidly.
