Gastroduodenal ulcer - diagnosis and treatment

Publication at Second Faculty of Medicine |
2005

Abstract

Diagnosis and treatment of gastroduodenal ulcer has made significant progress in recent decades due to the development of endoscopic techniques and understanding of the principles of inhibition of hydrochloric acid secretion by H 2 receptor antagonists and proton pump blockers. Antisecretory treatment significantly contributed to the healing of gastroduodenal ulcers, but had no effect on the incidence of recurrences.

A fundamental change occurred only in connection with the discovery of H. pylori and the introduction of eradication treatment into clinical practice. The effect of this therapy significantly affected the healing of ulcers and reduced their recurrence.

This has significantly reduced the demands on surgical treatment.
