From Budapest to Strasbourg - Cantor Marcel Lorand (1912-1988)

Abstract

In 1964, coming from the neolog Great Synagogue of Budapest, the Hungarian cantor Marcel (Martón) Lorand accepted the position of a cantor in the orthodox Synagogue de la Paix in Strasbourg. This paper attempts to trace Lorand's life and work by his disc records and by personal memories of some of his Strasbourg colleagues.

Lorand's case can be taken as an example for the challenges a cantor may be faced with when he changes from one community to another. As the main protagonist of the synagogue service he has to be flexible and adapt himself to the local liturgical customs.
