Publication at Faculty of Humanities |

Abstract

This paper examines V. M.

Kramerius, but is reluctant to see him as a national revivalist or patriot, preferring to focus mainly on his writing and publishing activities. Kramerius in his newspapers and books actively communicated with his readers, presenting them with a framework of how they should properly behave and what they should read.

Regular communication with readers and a sharing of certain information produced the late 18th century community, which became a platform for the emergence of new ethnic not to mention national identities. However, this article refers mainly to the fact that Kramerius' appeal to readers and reading Czech books may not necessarily be an attempt to achieve a higher ideal such as the public good.

On the contrary, his activities may also have translated into Kramerius's own business interests.
