Carboxylic acid in natural materials

Publication at Faculty of Science |
2014

Abstract

Carboxylic acids are one of the most important organic compounds. In everyday life we commonly use the carboxylic acids or their derivatives.

We can mention citric acid used in the kitchen during cooking and baking or used as an agent for elimination of calcium deposits not only in jug kettle. Natrium or potassium salts of fatty acids, apart from being derivatives of carboxylic acids, are commonly used as soaps.

The esters are used as medicines (for example acylpyrine) or as fragrant ingredient of perfumes. This article describes in detail carboxylic acids which were used in chemical experiment.

The experiment show proof of citric and tartaric acid in natural material due to their reaction with limewater. There are some other experiments related to the main theme of the experiment.

Common laboratory equipment and chemicals are necessary for realization of this experiment. That is the reason why this experiment is suitable for realization in grammar school during laboratory classes or during project teaching.

It is also convenient for inquire-based science education.
